April and Steven had a magical engagement session at beautiful Maymont Park. We met up on a very hot and busy day and quickly realized that prom/graduation sessions, a wedding and a surprise proposal were all taking place at the park. Although it was 90° outside and the park was super crowded, you would never be able to tell by looking at these two Michigan natives.

April and Steven met in October of 2018 at Beaumont Hospital (in Michigan) where she was working as an Interventional Radiology Technologist and he was doing his anesthesia residency. He rotated through her department and she thought he was SO CUTE! All of April’s coworkers knew how she felt and so they kept making her go into that lab “to work” aka just be around him. They talked a little, but nothing happened at first.

Fast forward to March 2019 when they went on their first date and immediately clicked! At the end of the night when they said their goodbyes, Steven asked April to go on another date that Friday and of course, she said yes! However, Steven couldn’t wait that long and invited April to join him and some friends the very next day. From that moment they were inseparable.

In July Steven left for fellowship in Ohio while April stayed in Michigan. She was devastated because she was always against long distance, but Steve assured her that this was meant to be and everything would work out. April put all of her faith in Steven.

July 2020 Steven finished fellowship, April quit her job, and they moved to Virginia to start their lives together! April constantly dropped hints and brought up getting engaged and married for months, while Steven just always laughed and said, “Don’t worry, we will eventually.” 

In March 2021, Steven and April spent a weekend doing all of the fun things that they love doing together (favorite restaurant, breweries, exploring new neighborhoods & new breweries, walks to the beach, etc) and several times she thought, “OMG this is the moment, he’s going to ask!” but he never did. She was going crazy!

At the end of the night they brought blankets, candles, and music out to their deck to hangout and he kept going in and out of the house grabbing things and turning the light on & off. She finally said, “Sit down and stop turning the dang light on!” Then she saw his hands were full of things so she said, “I’m sorry I didn’t realize you had more stuff you needed the light for” and he said, “Yes but also, I wanted to ask you something” – and he got down on one knee and took out the ring. She said yes immediately and they both started crying! He admitted to trying to trick her and stringing her along all weekend so she would truly be surprised, which she definitely was!
